The Stories of the Gospel of Lent

Today Christians across the world are preparing for the beginning of Lent. Lent is a season of forty days, not counting Sundays, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday. Lent is a time of repentance, and preparation for the coming of Easter. It is a time of self-examination and reflection on our relationships with God and our development as disciples.

Whether or not you celebrate the season of Lent, I have developed a series of Bible passages selected fairly chronologically from all four Gospel accounts that I will send to you daily beginning Ash Wednesday and ending Easter Morning. These brief passages begin with Mary’s anointing of Jesus in John 12 and end in the story of Easter in Matthew 28. I call this series “The Stories of the Gospel of Lent”. These stories form a scriptural journey to Easter for you that you may use in any way that is helpful to you. All you need to get started anytime is to send your email to me at: thecenterindy@gmail.com

All the passages that will be sent will be in the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. This said, the scripture links may be helpful for your reflections. If you click those links and scroll down in the new widow just below the passage you’ll find the “Compare All Versions” button that allows you to see the passage in your favorite version or multiple versions if that is helpful.

I like to follow a simple process for reflecting on Scripture and will conveniently provide all that you need in each daily email to engage the following process or how ever you decide to approach the passages:

To begin… Pray for God’s Spirit to speak through the passage.

Read the passage… maybe more than once… maybe aloud.

Quiet your heart and listen for the Spirit’s leading.

Consider the reflection questions provided in each email and try to answer them in one sentence… two words will do in some cases.

Following the “Discovery Bible Study” method, the reflection questions will be the same each day, and if you write down or journal your answers throughout this period you will have  a wonderful set of Biblical reflections that can help you discover God and develop as a disciples of Jesus in new and exciting ways. May this be a spiritual next  step for you in the right direction!
